What a wonderful world

So, the other day everyone at the station was talking about Hurricane Ike and how it would affect Texas. Suddenly, I realized I was low on gas and I needed to fill up. Yup, that's right. My brother lives in Beaumont with his wife and son and the first thing I thought about was how I needed to fill up on gas. Granted, it was a smart move since I did it later that day at 3.51 and now it's 3.57 at the best. However, what has this world come to where this thought process happens?

I shop like a 90-year-old woman now, with coupons in hand. When I walk up and down the aisles of the grocery, I pick up items I normally buy and ask myself, "do I need this?" Whenever there are side displays of sale items, I always pick them up. Penny-pinching.

Granted, I'm not as evil as I make myself out to be. I mean, I knew my brother was evacuating with his family at that time. But, money has become so tight in this economy that it's affecting those with jobs. Now, just imagine families just starting out? I remember my grandmother telling me that my grandfather and her were so poor when they started their marriage that they ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner every night. And both of them were working. Money didn't stretch very far back then and it seems we've fallen into the same time now. I can only hope that the government will quit bailing out companies who have done nothing but hurt the little people of this country and instead help those little people with surviving these-shall I say it-recession. That's two recessions under Bush, pretty impressive man. Obviously the laissez-faire idea of economics has finally bitten you on the bum.
