Unheard-of pasta

In case you didn't read my previous blog entry, I'm Italian. Whenever I try a few, new recipes out and I feel like I'm not quite succeeding...I go back to old standards: PASTA.

So this week was sponsored by the food: Pasta. I drew up a menu of different types of pasta dishes that I would try out for the first time. I mean, at least I know how to cook pasta. I had never made tortellini soup before, but that was rather simple. Last night's was really simple because I had made that one before. The one "long shot" that I put on the menu was tonight's meal. The main thing was I was about to make a pasta dish without sauce, which was rather foreign to me. But, I figured I was up for anything. Plus, my adventure, not only into weird pasta dishes, was inspired by the Joy of Cooking cookbook.

So, tonight's weird pasta was called "orecchiette." I mean, my dad's FROM Italy and I had never heard of that one. But, I looked it up. It looked like I could just substitute it with macaroni shells if I couldn't find it at the grocery, so I wasn't too worried. However, there it was. In the middle of the pasta aisle. Gleaming and only costing $1.50. I mean, doesn't get much better than that! So, I picked it up hastily.

The recipe was actually shockingly simple. Mind you, I messed it up. I was supposed to chop up the sausage into tiny bits. However, for some reason, it wouldn't chop. It was rather upsetting. So, I said "screw it" and decided to just have slices of sausages. We chopped broccoli and added some garlic and red pepper flakes. I stirred the pot around and it was smelling so delicious,I could barely focus.

I added the pasta, veggies and a little cheese and voila! It was actually delicious! At first, David and I were both pretty worried about the pasta without sauce. It was wonderful. We gave it a 4.3 out of 5. Now, for the lazy man's version of posting the recipe, in case any of you want to make it yourselves. And, like I said earlier, you can substitute orecchiette with macaroni shells. Though, if our local Walmart had it, then surely your grocery store will.
