Running on empty

Well, since moving here, David and I have taken up jogging together. When you run at 6,000 feet, the altitude can really get to you. However, for some reason, the altitude didn't really affect me. Now, the dry air really kicked my bum. I take a breath in and my whole nose and throat feel raw.

Despite this, David and I also watch The Biggest Loser. SPOILER ALERT: The most recent episode had the final four contestants run a marathon.

This inspired me.

You see, I have terrible hips (in case you don't know). I have no cartilage in my right hip and next-to-none in my left hip. All the doctors I've seen have pretty much said "Looks like you need a hip replacement." However, my medical insurance will not cover a hip replacement when you are under the age of 35 because they consider it self-inflicted. So, I settled that I would deal with the everyday pain until I could a) afford to replace my hips or b) get above the age of 35.

Also because of this hip problem, my doctors forbade me to run. Ever. Ever ever ever. So, I figured I would never run again.

But, as I was watching The Biggest Loser (and realizing that I need to lose 7 pounds before our wedding) I realized "Screw the doctors. I'm going for a jog. I mean, if a 350 pound man can run a marathon, surely I can!"

So, this weekend, I signed up for a 5k. My first 5k. David is going to run it with me (he's a much better runner than I am) and I'm really excited. My goal is to finish. I can steadily run about 2 miles right now, so adding 1.1m or whatever shouldn't kill me. I'm hoping the adrenaline will take over.

Point being, at 8 a.m. MDT on Saturday, I will start my first 5k. Wish me luck.

Good luck! You're braver than I am. If it makes you feel better, I need to lose at least 15 pounds (hopefully more) before your wedding.

Good luck, Ashley! At least we all have goals (though you do NOT need to lose ANY weight)
