Who WANTS it to feel like the first time

I took my little car, Tim, in for a check up this morning. He was completely fine, just needed a tire rotation and oil change. While I was driving to work after his check up, I was grooving to some tunes on the radio.

"It feels like the first time" came on the radio.

Now, I don't know if you are familiar with the late-70s classic hit by Foreigner, but here is a link to the song if you do not know it.

My problem with this song is actually the rate of comparison. When does ANYONE want something to feel like the first time. I mean, I understand the idea of it being exciting the first time, but other than that, the first time for pretty much anything sucks. Here are some examples:

* Riding a bike
-I don't know about you, but the first time most people ride a bike, they fall down and most likely scrape their arm or knee. Not a good feeling.

* Dentist appointments
-The first time you get your teeth cleaned is awful. You have no clue what it's going to feel like and then - BAM - grit on your teeth and they are sucking up your slobber.

* Working
-The first day at work is usually terrible. You don't know anyone, you have no clue what you are doing for the first few hours and you go home, usually, very overwhelmed with a lot of equipment and computer passwords.

* Driving
-The first time driving is atrocious. Your parent (whichever one has drawn the short straw to take you out) is gripping their seat for dear life, slamming that invisible passenger-side brake and yelling at you to either slow down or use the accelerator.

* Cooking
-I would say that most people burn or under-cook whatever they are trying for the first time without supervision. Some people can handle that, and good for them. For me, the first time I tried to make instant oatmeal for my mom when she was sick, I made it too soupy.

* Sports
-For most people who are not quite as athletic as others, the first time playing sports can be both dangerous and embarrassing. You either get hit too hard or can't make contact with the ball or airball your first free throw.

What other things suck when you do them for the first time. Keep it clean, people. Obviously that one sucks too, as most people don't know what they are doing and the silence or small talk afterward is excruciating.

this just seems like the perfect place to insert a "your mom" joke. but i don't know which one of your family members read your blog so i will leave that humor to myself.

happy thanksgiving.

Loved this. I mean really, I hate doing anything for the first time. I think there needs to be a song about the comfort of doing something for the second time. And it should involve something about learning from the first, like tasting hot chocolate for the second time, after you learned that the first time burns your tongue.

I couldn't agree more Janessa.
