My dearest friend Shelley and her boyfriend Bobby came to visit us this weekend. It was absolutely wonderful. We were sitting in Brandan and Ian's backyard, lounging in the shade on folding chairs and drinking. It was great. All the sudden, I looked around and realized that this was my college summed up in a few hours. Except we were outside. And we weren't sweating up a storm due to the immense humidity. And we didn't have exams the next day. Otherwise, exactly the same.
Then, after relaxing for most of the morning, Ian knew about this concert up in the Four Mile Canyon area. A few months ago, there was a really devastating wildfire in that area. Forests were destroyed, and it was awful. Ian's cousin lives in that area. So, they saw the destruction firsthand. One of the best stories I heard from the fire was really inspiring. The firefighters (who are volunteer), had to make a decision while they were standing on their fire line. Their fire station was right next to a school house. They stood their ground and fought the blaze off to make sure the school house was not damaged. While they were fending it off, it completely ruined their fire house. They legitimately let their own fire house burn to save the school house.
So, Ian had told us there was a benefit concert Saturday night to help rebuild the fire house. We all were excited to go to show our support for the brave firefighters who fended off the fire. So, we drove the 45 minutes up to Boulder and wound through the steep roads at the foothills of the mountains. We climbed to the top and thought we saw the fire station (where the concert was supposed to be near). Yet, there wasn't a single car. So, luckily, since it's a small town, we were able to slow down and ask a nice lady coming out of a nearby church about the concert.
"That concert was yesterday," she retorts. We all start laughing. Guess that means we missed it. So, we called Ian's cousin, apologized and went back down the mountain. We debated for a bit what we were going to do now that the concert wasn't going to happen. Since Shelley went to CU-Boulder for a year, she knew the area pretty well. So, her request was "Take me to the place where you can see pretty things." For some reason, Ian knew exactly what she was talking about.
We drove to the top of the Flagstaff Mountain, which has a great scenic overlook. It was really lovely up there, and we had a blast up there taking ridiculous photos and obscene ones also. Bam. I'm not quite sure why I look so wide in this photo (except for the fact that I obviously only befriend skinny beautiful people). We had a blast up there and were really glad that Ian could interpret Shelley's hilarious way of talking. It was worth the drive.
Then, we drove back down the mountain to a really great dive bar called Dark Horse. Somehow, I got hit on by a chick and that same girl hit on Shelley's boyfriend, Bobby. But the main benefit of this dive bar had to be the marvelous selection of video games. Brandan and Shelley found their inner hunter. Turns out Shelley's quite skilled with a gun.
