Pants in this relationship

Before I start on the real purpose of my blog today, I just wanted to scream WE'RE BACK ON TIME WARNER!!! Those crazies up in New York finally came to an agreement. So, we are back on the TV sets of 48% of Austin. We survived. In a month. So, yay!

Now, for the purpose. Today, I was heading to the bathroom and my boss was talking to the head of our photography department (mind you, in TV news, photography means videography. Don't ask questions, just accept it). My boss is having a Halloween party on Saturday and he was asking the other guy if he was coming. I zoned out for a second while they were talking, but then I hear the guy say "Well, I'll have to ask ___ if I can go." Then, my boss responds with the phrase that I think is ridiculous "What? Who wears the pants in that relationship? Well, I'd love to see you there."

Where to start...I don't think the phrase "Who wears the pants in this relationship" not because it's sexist. Not because it's ridiculous because both men and women can wear pants. But, because, when one is in a committed relationship, you don't make decisions alone anymore. These are now decisions that are made together. Sure, there are some decisions, like "I want to wear this shirt today" that are made. But, when it comes to holidays, I think it's acceptable to ask your loved one what they had planned or wanted to do. So the questions "Who wears the pants in that relationship" is irrelevant since both do and both make decisions.

Then, I found out that guy was gay and the meaning of that phrase became immensely ironic.
